A friend of mine wants to raid some fig trees in exchange for strawberry fig jam. Any takers? By the way, he is a natural in the kitchen, so this tasty jam is sure to please.

If you think you might like to learn to clog, the Shufflin' Shoes Cloggers are offering beginner classes on Thursday nights during the summer at 7:30 p.m. at Whistle Stop Dance on the southeast corner of Jupiter & Arapaho, second floor facing Arapaho.

We’ll show you some clogging and have YOU clogging before the hour is over! If you like it, we’ll tell you how to continue—if not, we’ll enjoy meeting you anyway.

No special clothing or shoes are required. If you have tap shoes with flat heels, they'll do fine, but clogging taps can be ordered if you want them. It's best to wear cool, comfortable clothes, such as t-shirts and shorts. The first lesson is always FREE.

Whether you’re looking for exercise, a creative or performing outlet, or are just curious about those crazy folks called cloggers – come see us!

If you have any questions, just call me at 214-575-7530 or e-mail txhoucks@sbcglobal.net. For more information about our team or clogging in general, visit our website at http://www.orgsites.com/tx/shufflinshoes.

Remember, the first lesson is free so you have nothing to lose.

Paula Collard on "CHECK YOUR ELECTRICAL PANEL"

If your house was built during the ’60s, '70s or '80s, it probably has a Federal Pacific Electric Panel. The Dallas Morning News article from August 21, 2010, “Is Your Breaker Box Safe?” has caused some alarm as shown on their blog site at 8:30 am Saturday.

This should raise concern but not alarm or panic if you have a Federal Pacific Panel box “FPE”.
As a Licensed Electrical Contractor in the State of Texas for 34 years, I wish to offer the following for your consideration if you have this panel and want to replace it:
1. Make sure your contractor is licensed in the State of Texas and your local city.

2. All Electricians must have a State of Texas license as well as any helper or apprentice.

3. A full background check is required for all employees who enter your home. This is true for AC and plumbing as well.

4. Before work begins:
a. Requires a certificate of insurance made out to you. This should include your name and address with at least a 10 – 30 day notification of cancelation of coverage.
b. This certificate should be mailed from the insurance carrier to the address shown on the certificate of insurance and include General Liability and Workers Compensation coverage.
c. A copy of the city permit posted so it can be seen from the street. Electrical Permit can only be taken out by the Contractor.
d. The code has changed over the years required updates on the service ground, ARC fault breakers for all outlets in bedrooms, GFI outlets or GFI breakers on all outlets in bathrooms and in the garage. A TVSS (Transmit Voltage Surge Suppressors) should be added to any panel replaced or existing.

5. Some circuit breakers are over sized for new AC units that have been replaced. The newer units should have smaller size breakers since it requires a lesser amperage. Over sized breakers could have an effect on the AC Unit Warranty.

6. The Electrical Contractor must take out the City Permit not the homeowner. The work must be inspected and approved by the city inspector and released to ONCOR Electric to reconnect and set meter.

7. Final payment to contractor should be made after #6 (above) is fully complied with.

8. Beware of a man with a truck who will make you a deal, without proper displayed license number on truck.

9. Always pay with a check or credit card (never with cash).

10. Not all service replacements are a cookie cutter cost. If you have your panel located in a closet or the electrician must work in the attic with blown installation or some exceptional equipment the cost could be more.

I only offer this advice if you are planning a service change to replace an existing panel. If you are interested in reading the DMN article go to: http://www.dallasnews.com/ “Experts say electrical panels in Dallas-area homes may be a fire waiting to happen” 10:57 AM CDT on Saturday, August 21, 2010

Police reports indicate that during the first week of August, two of our residences have had their outside a/c units stolen. One was on Branwood and the other on Whispering Hills. One or both may have been residences up for sale and unoccupied. Residents should maintain an eye out for this type of activity and report anything suspicious. They may resort to stealing a/c units from those of us on vacation.

After a month of driving past the piles of debris in front of the house on the corner of Whispering Hills and Branwood, there was great rejoicing when the bulk trash day came and it was FINALLY picked up. Imagine my dismay that within 72 hours (I believe) a new and equally massive pile of debris has once again been deposited on the curb to await pick up weeks from now. Anything that can be done about this or do I just call the city? (it is going to be a dangerous pile susceptible to fire after sitting out there baking in this heat no less.) I don't have a problem with folks pushing the limits on putting the bulk trash out, but this is a little much.

The July/August newsletter has just been posted online (see menu bar above). It will be several days before most residents receive the printed version at their door.

Also online is our 2010 WHNA Membership Directory. Since this is private information, you'll need to login and go to the Members Only forum to view it. Only paid WHNA members for 2010 will be given a directory.

One more thing... board minutes have been updated in the Members Only forum. Board meetings are held once a month. There has been a lot of activity this year, so you are encouraged to read the minutes to be aware of things that affect our neighborhood. A new slate of officers will be voted on in a couple of months, and we are just beginning our nomination process.

Please refer to the July/August newsletter for people to contact if you have any questions. It's never too late to get involved!

Great new burger place on Skillman (Tom Thumb/El Fenix shopping center). Burger Spot prides itself on local produce and black angus beef. The choices are great and the taste was excellent. They offer salads and specialty items along with 18 choices of burgers and a variety of fries. Since burger joints are a dime a dozen, I thought I would pass this along as one worth trying if you love good Hamburgers.

According to current police incident reports, two persons were reported missing, one on 7/09 and another on 7/15, from residences on Lawler and Bettywood. One is a 30 year old black man and the other is a 78 year old asian. The reason I am posting this is a missing report of an adult is rare for our neighborhood and two reports in close proximity appear unusual.

Dear Neighbor:
I have received many emails regarding the Dallas Housing Authority plan to put two permanent supportive housing communities in our neighborhoods. Many question whether Forest Lane is the right place for these communities. Some express concern that crime could go up. There is also concern that the very people that are supposed to be getting help are being put in a difficult situation and some of you feel our district has already done its fair share when it comes to permanent supportive housing. Please know-your voices are being heard.

Permanent supportive housing is a very complex issue that requires thorough and thoughtful discussion. The Mayor and I have had conversations regarding this issue and as a result of these conversations the Mayor and I are asking the Dallas Housing Authority along with the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance to set aside the month of July for an open, frank and thoughtful discussion with neighborhoods being affected. If DHA and MDHA agree, then I will ask the Board of the Lake Highlands Area Improvement Association to put together a Blue Ribbon committee made up of the leadership of the affected neighborhoods to open up the communication process. I hope that this process is the first step in a timely, constructive communication process between all stakeholders resulting in a Good Neighbor Agreement being adopted by all parties. This agreement would express in writing our mutual expectations with measurable accountability assigned to all.

Once we have done this, we will call a town hall meeting.

Friends, as I have said, this is a complicated and controversial issue. But I know the people in my district, and I have confidence that together, we can work through the issues in a constructive and respectful manner. This is too important of an issue not to get right.

All the best,

Larry Crumlish and I visited with Gary and Carolyn Jones today. I've been calling her "Caroline", but her name is Carolyn (sorry 'bout that). I remembered to take along my camera so I could get a photo of them. It helps to put a face with a name.

They will be moving into their new home this weekend. What a relief to finally get out of the hotel they've been in!

The adult daughter and grand daughter no longer are living with them, but are in Arlington at this time.

I hope you get a chance to meet Gary and Carolyn some day. They are the nicest people!

Thank you all for helping them these past weeks since the fire. If anyone has additional household items to donate, please call me at 469-330-0717 or Larry Crumlish at 972-231-6133. Again, beds top the list of importance, but other items are needed as well.

This afternoon (Sunday, June 27) I visited the Baribe family at their hotel and I took photos of them. I wanted all of you to “meet” them. To meet who you have so generously helped with your donations.

I renamed each photo with the name of who it is.

I have surely enjoyed getting to know this family, and hope a time comes when you all can meet them in person as well.

I will take photos of Caroline and Gary Jones when I see them next (If I remember to take along my camera, that is), so you can “meet” them, too.

Donna Mibus on "UPDATE on Baribe and Jones Families"

I wish we had more to report, but both families are still in hotels for now. The Jones family has found a duplex to move into, and they hope to be out of their hotel on June 30. The Baribe family has not yet found a place to move to, so they are still at the Quality Inn at Coit and 635.

I have been touched greatly by the kindness of the families in this neighborhood, through the generous offerings of money, clothing, and other items that have been donated so far. THANK YOU ALL! I wish I could fully express how much it has meant to both families. I can only say that many tears of joy have been shed over the love and care you have shown to them, in these past 3 weeks since the fire.

We have withdrawn funds from the donations that were made online and have purchased gift cards to give to the two families. We used the funds to purchase VISA cards, that they can use anywhere, and Walmart gift cards.

I am keeping a list going of “Future Items” that people have offered in the way of furnishings and household items for when the families move into homes. If you have items available please call me, Donna Mibus, at 469-330-0717 or you may call Larry Crumlish at 972-231-6133 and we will add your items to the list. Beds top the list in importance, but other items are greatly needed as well. I can let you know when you call if an item is still in need, or if it’s already on my list.

We are keeping the Fire Fund active, so people still wishing to donate online may do so. Remember, you do not need a Paypal account to donate. It will give you the option of using a credit card instead, after you click the “donate” button. We will purchase more gift cards as more funds become available. Please remember that even small amounts ($5 or $10) are greatly needed and greatly appreciated! Many small donations add up quickly, so every dollar counts!

Thank you all, so very much!

Among items that were lost in the fire, that consumed the Baribe family's home, were books. I've made a short list of some of the older girls' most favorite titles. If any of you have a copy of any of the following books and would like to donate them, just drop them off at my house and I'll take them to the family. You may call first to see if the same title has already been donated. The Baribes are still cooped up in that hotel, so having books to enjoy would be greatly appreciated.

“New Moon” by Stephenie Meyer (17 yr. old Barivere’s favorite book)

We had a flyer put on our door advertising an A/C Heater Tech. We are an A/C company and researched for a license as there was no TDLR number on the flyer which is required by the state of Texas. We searched for a license number in TDLR website and came up with nothing. We would like to make our community aware that it is illegal to perform these services without proper licensing and to not call on this company. Anyone can do a search on http://www.license.state.tx.us to check on licensing etc. The name on the flyer is Jorge Paulin. We just want to make people aware that this could be a scam to get into your home.
This has been reported to the TDLR and sent a faxed copy of the flyer to them.

I am fostering a very sweet kitty named Marble that I got from my sister. Marble is 10 years old and she is in very good health. She has been to the vet and got all her shots and a physical. She has lived with other cats and dogs and is used to living and sharing space. She is not declawed but does not use them on furniture. She loves to be petted especially her belly and enjoys sunning in the window. Please contact me or Jason Woelfel and you can come by and meet her.

Below is an announcement from our neighborhood crime watch liason officer, Ron Carpenter, about an upcoming VIP training class. Ken Willis and I took this course a few months back and we found it informative and helpful. I would recommend it to all who have an abiding interest in neighborhood security whether or not you take an active part in neighborhood patrols although that would be most helpful.
Ron Hendry

The next VIP class has been scheduled as a 1 day class on Saturday, July 31, 2010, from 10 am till 4 pm.. The entire class will be downtown at City Hall, 1500 Marilla. The reason we do it downtown is in order to tour the 9-1-1 center and Dallas Police dispatch center.///BE SAFE/rc

Donna Mibus on "I need boxes with lids please"

I could surely use some boxes with lids, like the kind you put files in, or the kind that copy paper comes in. The Baribe family's hotel room looks like a warzone, with stuff everywhere and bags upon bags of clothes and stuff piled everywhere. (the seven of them are sharing two connected rooms). It would be so helpful to organize the place a bit. If I had boxes with lids we could label them with each person's name, and then place each person's belongings in their own boxes. This will make it easier not only for them to find things, but it will make it easier when it comes time for them to move out of the hotel and into a more permanent home.

At my husband's office there are often empty boxes with lids in the copy room, and I've asked him to grab any he sees and bring them home to me. Would you all do the same? Look around the office for any empty boxes with lids. I can pick them up from you, or you can bring them to me at 10103 Deermont Trail.

The immediate needs of the Jones family are similar to the Baribe family.

Gary and Caroline Jones were able to save most of their clothes, but they reek of smoke. Larry is trying to find a dry cleaner who would be willing to clean their clothes for free.

Caroline recently suffered a stroke, so all this has been especially difficult for her.

Their daughter Crechelle (36 years old) was living with them, as was their 14 year old granddaughter, Kaela. While Caroline and Gary were able to save most of their clothes, Crechelle and Kaela lost all of theirs. We are still in need of their sizes and will post those later when we find them out. Gary described Kaela as being around 5' 3" tall and of medium build.

They are trying to find another home to rent ASAP, since hotels are too costly. But in the meantime, individual drinks and snacks (that don't need refrigeration) to keep in their hotel room would be appreciated.

When they move into a more permanent home bed linens and pillows would be greatly appreciated, as would other common household items (tv, dishes, pots and pans, etc). So if any of you have those type items that you are no longer using perhaps you could set them aside, and the family can get them later. You may send me a note of items and I will keep a list. (this way they know they don't have to buy this particular item)

And please consider donating to the Fire Fund, for the purchase of gift cards to give to these two families. You can donate using a credit card (see button on the right of this page).

All donations may be brought to my home, at 10103 Deermont Trail. You may call me with any questions - 469-330-0717.

Thank you, everyone.

On Wednesday Larry Crumlish and I walked through the Jones' side of the duplex on Bernardin Circle - the duplex that caught on fire this past Saturday (June 5).

The damage left me speechless, especially considering we were looking at the "good" side. The other side, where the Baribe family lived, is where the fire started, so it suffered more extensive damage (not safe to go on that side).

As Larry and I walked through the home (we were with Mr. and Mrs. Jones) it started raining outside, hard. The rain poured down through the huge gaps in the ceiling and roof. What an odd feeling, being inside a house, standing in the living room, and having rain coming down around you.

Larry went back later after the rain stopped and took the following photos. Again, this is of the side of the duplex that received the lesser damage.

I live on the east side of Deermont Trail, and I'm starting to feel like a target is on my house. Both my storage shed and home were broken into in 2003 (only a year and half after I moved in), the storage shed was broken into again about 6 months ago, and yesterday (Thursday, June 3), someone broke my gate to get into the back yard and threw one of my decorative edging stones through my back door, which is (was) made up of double-paned safety glass. Thankfully, I always have my alarm engaged and my permit up to date with the city, and so the perpetrator was scared away.

However, as I've said before, there seems to be a target on my home for some reason. I don't live extravagantly; I don't drive a new car, nor have I left out any boxes of any new electronic equipment (I don't have anything newer than 10 years old anyway.) I don't want to have to leave the neighborhood, but I can't handle this happening to me on, what seems, a regular basis.

I haven't read about any other issues, so that makes me feel even more isolated.

Donna Mibus on "*** IMMEDIATE Needs of the Baribe Family *** Please help"

IMMEDIATE Needs of the Baribe Family

Hopefully, none of us will experience a fire in our lifetime. Oh sure, we've all thought about it. The risk. And we think, “gosh, I would hate to have a fire and lose my old photographs,” or, “I would hate to lose my great grandma's handmade quilt, or my baseball card collection.” Some things are truly irreplaceable. The Baribe family lost these type things recently, as did the Jones family.

But what about basic things. I doubt any of us has said, “gosh, I would hate to have a fire and be left with just the clothes on my back.” But that's what the Baribe family is experiencing, in addition to losing irreplaceable stuff. Total loss. This realization came to me today as I sat on their hotel room bed (not many choices of places to sit in a hotel room, when there is a mother, father and five children milling about!). I was sitting next to Josephine Baribe, making a list of what their immediate needs were. I jotted down clothes sizes of all the girls, and the two year old boy, and when I got to Josephine she said, “my panty size is....” and then it hit me. These people, these poor souls, had truly lost EVERYTHING. Right down to their underclothes! The father didn't even have a belt to hold his pants up properly. You might be tempted to say “just go buy some more!” but that's not always possible to do. Not right away anyway.

We are currently seeking donations of cash, in order to purchase Walmart gift cards to give to the Baribe and the Jones families, so that soon they will be able to buy some of the very basic necessities that we all have need of. But in the meantime, we are seeking donations of gently used or even new clothing and other every day items that are needed immediately.

Most of us have extra clothes we no longer wear but are still in good shape. People with toddlers have diapers, which they also need. I bet a lot of you women are like me and have a box full of shampoo, conditioner and soap samples we've brought home from hotels. Are there toys your preschooler no longer plays with, that their 2 year old son would enjoy? In other words, if we all look around I bet we can more than fill the immediate needs of the Baribe family. We are meeting with the Jones family tomorrow and I will post a list of their immediate needs as well.

And if anyone is so inclined, new items that you purchase would also be greatly appreciated. New underclothes, for instance.

Anyone may bring items to my home, at 10103 Deermont Trail, and I will take them to the Baribe family. If you would like to call first to confirm we still have need of a specific item, you may reach me at 469-330-0717 (this way we don't end up with 5 of the same size swimsuits, for instance).

Thank you so much! The Baribe family escaped from Nigeria, because the government where they lived was killing their people. So they managed to get out, and the family lived for two and a half years in a refugee camp. They made it to America in 1998. They came here in hopes of making a better life for their family. This has truly been a devastation to them. I was touched by their humbleness, and moved by their heartfelt appreciation when they learned the neighborhood was coming together to help them.

Okay, here is the list. But if you all think of other basic needs that are not on this list, please don't hesitate to donate it.

Clothes for the FEMALES: (listed by person, with sizes)

Mother Josephine needs – 1X or 2X tops, 20 – 22 pants, 46 GGG bras, 20 panties (new)

17 year old Barivere needs– XL junior tops, 15 junior pants, size 9 shoes

15 year old Dorris needs – Medium junior tops, 5 junior pants, 7 ½ shoes, also needs a swim suit

11 year old Victoria needs - Small tops, 12 kids pants, 6 shoes, also needs a swim suit

8 year old Gloria needs – Small tops, 12 kids pants, 5 shoes

* I'm sure the four girls could also use new underwear

Please note - the number before each item means SIZE, not how many.

Clothes for MALES: (listed by person, with sizes)

Father Kenneth needs:
Pants - Waist 40: inseam 30
a belt - Waist 40
Jeans - Waist 40: inseam 30
Shorts - Waist 40
Shirts XL
Shoes 8 ½ to 9 the front of his feet are a bit wide

2 year old King needs: diapers size 5, size toddler 4 shirts and pants/shorts, shoes in 8 toddler

Also for 2 year old King:
swim suit
books, toys, crayons and coloring books, etc. (whatever will keep a 2 year old busy and happy while cooped up in a hotel room)

NON CLOTHING ITEMS:

laundry detergent
shampoo/ conditioner (even hotel samples would work)
toothpaste/brushes

Snacks for in the hotel room. The children are pretty much stuck in that hotel all day (now that school is out). So various snacks to keep in their room (maybe large packages from Sams?) would be greatly appreciated.

Bottled drinks or juices, but nothing that needs refrigeration. They've only a small cooler.

You may call me at 469-330-0717 with any questions, or to find out if an item is no longer in need. I'll try to keep an accurate list going. Items can be brought to me:

Donna Mibus
10103 Deermont Trail

I'll be posting a separate list for the Jones family. Larry Crumlish and I are meeting with them tomorrow, to go over their needs, but many of the things on the Baribe list would also be useful for the Jones. I'll see if they need clothes and get their sizes.

Thank you all!
