Chili Cook-off

(4 posts)
  1. There's been some interest for a neighborhood chili cook-off, and I'd like to start the discussion to get suggestions for our planners. I don't enjoy cooking, but I love to eat! My taste buds can be surprisingly sensitive. One of my friends made chili with such a complex medley of flavors that all worked together, including a hint of chocolate.

Most likely, this will be an outdoor event at Friendship Park. April might be a good time, as it will be warmer. No doubt judging will be favored by the participants, and perhaps awards given. Has this neighborhood ever had an event like this?

Please share your thoughts, experiences, and desire to participate. Even, if it's just to show up with a bowl and spoon.

We'd come! I think it sounds like fun. We would even try out some new chili recipes and bring something ourselves to offer up.

We were discussing the idea of a chili cook-off just the other day, and my daughter suggested coordinating it with the neighborhood night out.

Either way count us in. I never met a bowl of chili I didn't like! (but then I'm a native Texan)

Several years ago, my old neighborhood started a chili cook-off in conjunction with their annual picnic. It not only brought some new people to the event, but the chili augmented the other food served at the picnic. Some years there were 10+ entries. Judges are usually a local clergyman, the district councilman or firemen/police in attendance. Contestants get t-shirts with the picnic logo, and three winners get little trophies. Winning categories are Hottest Chili, Best on a Bun, and Best Overall.

I haven't made chili all winter - unusual for me. Mine is probably not a prize winning recipe but I might be willing to cook up a batch for a party if it is on a date that I could attend.
